HOW IT IS MADE

How is prickly pear seed oil produced? Walk me through the full process.

The production of prickly pear seed oil is highly labor-intensive at multiple stages. The process from harvest to bottled oil involves the following steps:

Harvest. Fruits are harvested in the early morning or late afternoon, when cooler temperatures and morning mist make handling slightly less hazardous. The cactus fruit is covered in glochides: clusters of microscopic barbed spines, invisible to the naked eye, that embed in skin on contact. Harvesters wear thick protective gloves and protective eyewear and position themselves with their back to the wind. Even with precautions, contact with glochides is unavoidable. The best way to remove them from skin is with adhesive tape rather than tweezers.

Detachment. Each fruit must be detached with care. The correct technique is a gentle rotation, clockwise or counterclockwise, to separate the fruit at its base with its peduncle (stem stub) intact. A bruise invisible to the eye will cause rot within hours of harvest. Research comparing harvest methods found that careful knife harvesting reduces fruit loss to 26%, while rushed manual harvesting results in 50% loss from damage.

Fruits out of reach are harvested using a reed pole of 3-4 meters with a hooked, sharpened end, a traditional tool unchanged across generations.

Maturity. Fruits reach optimal maturity 85-100 days after flowering, signaled by a color change in the skin from green to the characteristic color of the cultivar. The Aïssa variety produces fruit from June to August; the Moussa variety from September to December.

Seed separation. After harvest, the pulp is removed from each fruit and the seeds separated by hand. The seeds are then washed and dried before pressing.

Cold pressing. The dried seeds are mechanically cold-pressed without high-temperature processing, producing an unrefined oil that retains its characteristic fatty acid, tocopherol, sterol, and volatile profile.

Filtration and bottling. The raw-pressed oil is filtered and bottled. No additives, no dilution.

What is the Scozzolatura technique and how does it affect oil quality?

The Scozzolatura is a traditional agricultural technique practiced by experienced Moroccan cactus cultivators. It involves removing all spring flower buds, flowers, and young pads from the cactus during a precise 30-day window (from 50% bloom to end of flowering). This causes the plant to produce a second wave of flowers and fruit 35-45 days later, extending production beyond the standard summer season.

The off-season fruit produced through this technique is measurably different: weighing 120-160 grams compared to 60-80 grams for standard season fruit, with a sugar content of 16°Brix versus 12°Brix, fewer seeds, and more flesh. The technique can only be practiced in Morocco's coastal Atlantic regions where temperatures remain moderate; the hot continental interior is too extreme for the second flowering to succeed.

The technique must not be practiced on plants younger than 4 years. It requires precise timing and experienced hands. Practiced incorrectly, too early or too late, it fails entirely.

What happens to the cactus plants after pruning? Is anything wasted?

Nothing is wasted. Old cactus wood removed during rejuvenation pruning is dried and sold as fuel to local hammams (traditional Moroccan bathhouses) and communal bread ovens. The ash produced by burning this wood is then collected and returned to the plantations as a natural fertilizer for the cactus plants. This is a closed cycle that has operated across generations: the plant feeds the community, the community feeds the plant.

Rejuvenation pruning itself is practiced on plants every 25-30 years when production slows. Some plantations in the Ait Baâmrane region have been pruned and renewed across 80+ years of continuous cultivation without being uprooted, a testament to both the longevity of the plant and the knowledge required to maintain it.

What does prickly pear seed oil contain?

The fatty acid and antioxidant profile of prickly pear seed oil has been characterized in multiple peer-reviewed studies. Its primary components include:

• Linoleic acid (Omega-6): comprising over 60% of its fatty acid composition. A 2015 study analyzing 17 Moroccan prickly pear seed oil samples found linoleic acid ranging from 60.2% to 64.6%, with γ-tocopherol comprising 83-90% of the tocopherol fraction.

• Vitamin E (tocopherols): naturally rich in tocopherols, particularly γ-tocopherol. Published studies on Moroccan prickly pear seed oil have reported substantial concentrations, with values varying by origin and extraction method.

• Phytosterols: including β-sitosterol as the dominant sterol, which supports the skin's lipid barrier function.

The cultivation itself reflects generations of environmental knowledge: the terraced stone-walled plantations on Anti-Atlas slopes were engineered to capture every millimeter of rainfall in a region where annual precipitation can fall below 100mm. The two cultivars maintained in the region, Aïssa and Moussa, were selected and preserved by local communities specifically for their productivity and quality. This is not passive foraging but active, multigenerational agricultural stewardship.

What is an Amazigh women's cooperative and how does it relate to prickly pear seed oil?

Does prickly pear seed oil clog pores?

Prickly pear seed oil is lightweight and rich in linoleic acid, a fatty acid commonly found in skin-barrier lipids. Its fatty acid profile makes it a popular choice for people who prefer lighter facial oils, including those with congestion-prone skin. However, no botanical oil can be guaranteed not to clog pores, and individual responses vary. Patch testing is recommended.

Can I use prickly pear seed oil with retinol?

Yes. Prickly pear seed oil is compatible with retinol use. Its antioxidant content and fatty acid profile make it a reasonable choice for supporting the skin barrier during retinol use, which can cause temporary dryness and sensitivity. Apply the oil after retinol has absorbed, or use it on alternating evenings. There is no known interaction between prickly pear seed oil and retinol.

Does prickly pear seed oil go before or after moisturizer?

Prickly pear seed oil is generally applied after water-based serums and moisturizers, or mixed with a moisturizer. Oils form a lipid-rich finishing layer, so two to four drops are usually enough for the face.

Is prickly pear seed oil safe during pregnancy?

Pure prickly pear seed oil does not contain retinoids or essential oils and is generally used as a simple topical botanical oil. Pregnancy-specific clinical studies on prickly pear seed oil are limited, however, so anyone with individual medical concerns should consult their healthcare provider.

How long does prickly pear seed oil last, and does refrigeration help?

Unopened, prickly pear seed oil typically has a shelf life of 12-18 months from pressing when stored in a cool, dark location. Once opened, use within 6-12 months. Refrigeration can extend shelf life by slowing oxidation but is not required if the oil is stored away from heat and direct light. The naturally high tocopherol content of prickly pear seed oil provides some natural oxidative stability. An oil that has gone rancid will have a noticeably unpleasant or "off" smell.

Why does authentic prickly pear seed oil sometimes smell earthy or slightly nutty?

Unrefined, cold-pressed prickly pear seed oil has a mild, slightly earthy or nutty scent characteristic of the seed. This is normal. A completely odorless oil has typically been refined or deodorized, processes that can strip some of the oil's naturally occurring compounds. The scent should be faint; a strong or rancid smell indicates the oil has degraded.

How does prickly pear seed oil compare to argan oil?
